DHAKA, Bangladesh: Sheikh Abdul Hannan, a former chief of the Bangladesh Air Force, was arrested in Qatar on 15 October, according to Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which said it received confirmation of the arrest by email from Interpol.

The arrest follows two separate cases filed by the ACC against Hannan and his wife, Tahmina Begum, over allegations of acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income and conducting suspicious financial transactions.

According to the ACC, Hannan allegedly acquired assets worth Tk 32,850,506 ($265,896) beyond his known sources of income.

The commission also identified suspicious transactions totalling Tk 2,763.7 million across six bank accounts held in his name.

Based on its findings, the ACC filed a case under relevant anti-corruption and anti-money laundering legislation, alleging financial misconduct and the acquisition of unexplained wealth.

In a separate case, the ACC accused Tahmina Begum of acquiring assets worth Tk 19,100,304 beyond her known sources of income.

The commission also reported suspicious transactions totalling nearly Tk 11.8 million across 32 bank accounts held in her name.

Hannan has been named as the second defendant in the case against his wife, with the ACC alleging that he assisted her in the alleged offences.

The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings. The charges against Hannan and Begum have not been established as proven offences merely by the filing of the cases. HumanVoice could not verify the allegtions against defandants.
